4 QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE ON THE LOCATION FOR YOUR SESSION
Having your pictures taken should be so much fun, so figuring out the best location that suits you is an important part of the process.
Here are a few questions I ask my clients when we’re brainstorming ideas for their session:
1. What do you enjoy the most to do as a couple?
Encouraging my couples to think about their relationship and the things they like to do together will help set the tone for a fun date idea. It gives them the opportunity to share with me more about their hobbies and activities, this way I can also feel more in sync with their style. There is not right or wrong answer to this question. It can be a Sunday Funday activity, like walking around town in the afternoon, grabbing some drinks and apps at your favorite spot, or it can be cruising the beach and playing in the waves during sunset, or a chill movie night eating popcorn.
The more we make it about YOU, the more fun and relaxed you will feel in front of the camera.
2. Are you more comfortable in nature or in an urban environment?
We’re all guilty of looking for inspiration on social media, but sometimes we have no idea the effort it takes to achieve what we see online. Especially when shooting in nature, there are so many elements to consider. If you don’t feel your best around bugs, shooting in tall grass fields probably won’t be your best choice. Or if you are a more reserved person, shooting at sunset on a Saturday in Sunset Cliffs will probably make you cringe. That said, if you guys are into some wild adventures then please feel free to share this information with me as well. Exploring new locations, going out of town to your favorite camping spot, or hiking a mountain at sunrise are all unforgettable experiences, and I will be more than happy to capture those moments for you.
Feeling comfortable in the environment (and in your shoes) will always make the experience show as more authentic. Each couple has their right place to shine.
3. Are you planning on bringing your dog?
YES!! The answer is always yes for doggies in sessions. For those who know me, they know I love dogs more than anything in the world, so they’re always welcome. However, it’s important to keep in mind that they can potentially be a big distraction. Choosing the right location for both you and your puppy to feel comfortable is huge. Dog beaches can be very chaotic for example, so I tend to gravitate more to beaches in San Diego that dogs are allowed on leash. Asking a friend to tag along ca be a great choice also, that way we have help if you don’t want to share the spotlight with your fur baby in all the photos :)
4. Is shooting indoors a possibility?
In-home sessions, booking a cute hotel room while visiting town, or making a dinner reservation at your favorite local restaurant are always super fun ideas. Remember to ask for permission before spending a lot of money. Some places are more accommodating than others, so I’me here to help you coordinate the logistics too. Indoor sessions are more intimate and in this environment we can also be very playful and creative with our ideas. Like exploring flash photography, which is such a vibe.
